Russ was born and raised in Kenora and has always been an extremely accomplished keyboard player. His musical career began with a band called, The Lakers who performed regularly at teen dances in Kenora. This name was eventually change to The XLs and there was always healthy competition between Satan and the D-Men and Russ's band.
Shortly before their move to Winnipeg, Satan and the D-Men were extremely fortunate to obtain Russ's services which rounded out the band's great 60's sound.
