Dean has played and toured with the Northern Roots Band and Rodney Brown opening for the likes of Little River Band, Fred Eaglesmith, Ian Tamblyn as well as being featured on CBC's "Vinyl cafe". Dean was a founding member of The Derivatives which started as a Bluegrass/folk group in college in 1981 and evolved into a country rock group by the mid 90's. As a songwriter, Dean has penned a number of works that were recorded by The Derivatives.
